This year the Manuel António da Mota Prize rewarded the institutions that distinguished themselves in combating the health crisis and its consequences in the areas of combating poverty and social exclusion, health, education, employment, innovation and social entrepreneurship, digital and technological inclusion and support for families.

The ABC-Algarve Biomedical Centre was distinguished for the development of the 'ABC-COVID' project, with an impact on the population of the Algarve, Baixo Alentejo and Alentejo Litoral, also integrating several initiatives to mitigate the spread of Covid-19 in the country.

Of the various initiatives developed by this consortium, in close collaboration with the UAlg Medicine course, the production of hand sanitiser, viral transport media, swabs and diagnostic kits for the whole country stands out; the creation of a laboratory for carrying out diagnostic tests and a sample collection system (Drive-through or mobile teams); the creation of an information platform for health professionals; research based on serological screening tests, and more.

It should also be noted that ABC has carried out tests in several schools, at public events and charity institutions, in a joint effort with Social Security and local authorities.
