Applications will be accepted until 15 July for the Manuel Gomes Guerreiro Prize which will recognize a published work, book or doctoral thesis that has contributed to scientific development in one of the fields of study of the University of Algarve.​​​​​​​

Prize: This annual award of 10,000 euro is organized by the University of Algarve with the support of the City Councils of Loulé and Faro. It recognizes the best academic work in one of the following fields: Arts, Communication and Heritage; Social and Educational Sciences; Health Sciences and Technology; Exact and Natural Sciences; Economics, Management and Tourism; or Engineering and Technology.

Candidates: Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply, although special consideration will be given to encouraging young researchers. There is a limit of one submission per candidate and it must have been published during the year of the prize or that immediately preceding. The work cannot have previously won any awards. Doctoral theses can be submitted, provided they are completed. Submissions must be written either in Portuguese or English.

Application Process: Candidates must submit the application form available here and deliver it directly to the UAlg Expediente Geral, at the Penha Campus, or send it by registered letter. The deadline is July 15, 2019. The application must be accompanied by three complete copies of the paper, one hard copy and two digital ones. (See Contest Regulations here)

Award Ceremony: The prize will be awarded on December 11th, 2019 at the commemoration of the 40th Anniversary of the University of Algarve.

About Manuel Gomes Guerreiro

Manuel Gomes Guerreiro was born in the Vargens community of Querença parish in 1919. He became a forestry engineer in 1943.

The same year, he joined the Forestry Experimentation Station of Sobreiro in Alcobaça, under the prestigious leadership of Joaquim Vieira Natividade. He studied the ecology of several Portuguese forest flora species, namely the genera Populus, Castanea, and Quercus.

In 1967 he earned a position as aggregate professor and later as an extraordinary professor at the Technical University of Lisbon, Instituto Superior de Agronomia. While working on an assignment abroad, he was unanimously awarded the title of Professor from the University of Luanda in 1968.

He served as researcher and later Director of the Institute of Scientific Research of Mozambique, from 1958. In Angola he later served as Director of the Agronomy and Forestry degree courses and was appointed Deputy Dean of the University of Luanda from 1972. In January 1974, was a member of the Founders Commission of the University of Évora, and was later transferred, at his request, to the New University of Lisbon, where headed the Department of Environmental Sciences.

In 1979 he was appointed President of the Founders Commission of the University of the Algarve and became its first Rector in 1982 until he stepped down in 1986.

He was Secretary of State for the Environment in the first constitutional government in 1976 and 1977.

Following his retirement in 1989, he was invited to join the Board of Directors of the International University, and shortly thereafter he was elected Vice-Rector of the same institution of higher education.

He was the author of a vast bibliography, especially in the fields of Forestry, Ecology and Teaching.

Manuel Gomes Guerreiro was one of the most prominent figures of the Algarve of the 20th century, not only as a citizen but also as a scientist.

He passed away on 10 April 2000.
