The event aims to highlight the heritage of the past in this field and to shed new light, from a historical and comparative perspective, on the operational modalities surrounding the pedagogical action of those who were in charge of the teaching of modern/foreign languages. It is also intended to deepen the knowledge of some pedagogical practices promoted by actors (preceptors, educators or language teachers) who are holders of different models of training and of some acquired knowledge transmissible throughout their career within the educational system, questioning the status and the profile of these educational actors, taking into account also the training and the pedagogical follow-up of the teachers as well as the mechanisms of diffusion of the educational reforms and of the ministerial or other instructions.

This congress, which for the second time takes place at UAlg, is held under the impulse of the international network of associations and research centres in the field of the History of Modern/Foreign Language Teaching, which is composed of the Portuguese Association for the History of the Teaching of Foreign Languages and Literatures (APHELLE) the Centro Interuniversitario di Ricerca sulla Storia degli Insegnamenti Linguistici (CIRSIL), the Henry Sweet Society for the History of Linguistic Ideas, the Sociedad Española de Historiografía Lingüística (SEHL) and the Société Internationale pour l'Histoire du Français Langue Etrangère ou Seconde (SIHFLES).

The Association Portugaise d'Études Françaises (APEF), the Associação Portuguesa de Professores de Línguas Estrangeiros do Ensino Superior (APROLINGUAS) and the AILA Research Network on History of Language Learning and Teaching (HoLLT.net) support this congress.
