UAlg - Plastic

In 2018, an internal campaign was launched by UAlg to sensitize the academic community to reduce the use of disposable plastic materials (for single use) based on the results of research carried out at UAlg Research Centers (CCMAR and CIMA) and on the strategy European “EC strategy-plastics-2018”.

In this context, a campaign was created within the scope of “UAlg + healthy with - plastic”.

With email alerts and panels in all UAlg canteens and bars, explaining the impact that this type of plastics has on marine life, on ecosystems in general and on human health, and alternative uses of plastic after being recycled, such as for example its transformation into filament. At the same time, the UAlg Social Action Services stopped buying single-use plastic material (straws, straws, glasses, plates and disposable plastic cutlery).

This good practice has already been adopted by some private bars / restaurants in the UAlg, as well as in its proximity, and has also been disseminated to some secondary schools in Faro.

These good practices have already had an echo in the media, with reports on SIC, TVI, RTP and TSF.

UAlg strengthened relations with Algar and received, in 2019, at the beginning of the school year, the visit of the environmental education vehicle, which was present one week at Campus da Penha and provided training in the theme of recycling to the 10 employees of university residences in Faro.

In this initiative, 200 ecobags were also made available to the institution, to be used not only in university residences, but also for restricted areas of colleges, schools and research centers, where domestic waste (packaging, glass and paper) is produced.

The UAlg 2018 Freshman Reception week also featured an activity dedicated to Recycling, which encouraged “good separation habits anywhere” and not just at home.

In 2019 UAlg was awarded the NOVOVERDE Award - “Recycling Plastic is an Art”, which is under development and consists of the implementation of the circular economy in the institution, using the discarded plastic to crush and use by students of Arts and Prototyping , after being transformed into a filament. In addition, through this program, the reduction of water bottles is promoted, through the installation of drinking fountains in places with public access.
