The results presented, through a bibliometric analysis, provide a systematic assessment of scientific articles on Marine and Coastal Tourism worldwide through a multidisciplinary analysis in the WoS (Web of Science) database. In total, 162 countries contributed to this study.

The United States leads with 1,011 articles, representing 16.33% of all publications. Portugal occupies the 11th place of the ranking with 315 articles, equivalent to 3.47% of the publications. The work done by UAlg's Research and Development Units (UI&D), such as the Centre for Research in Tourism, Sustainability and Well-being (CinTurs), the Marine and Environmental Research Centre (CIMA), the Marine Sciences Centre (CCMAR) and the pole of CiTUR (Centre for Research, Development and Innovation in Tourism), contributed greatly to the excellent results achieved by UAlg.

For the Vice-Rector for Research and Internationalisation, Alexandra Teodósio, these results are explained by the synergy that exists between the UI&D of UAlg, in the areas of tourism, environment and marine sciences, which allows transdisciplinary research and will allow the subsequent development of postgraduate degrees in marine and coastal tourism in academia. The recent establishment of the only Collaborative Laboratory in the area of Innovation in Tourism based in the Algarve, the KIPT will further enhance the valorisation of knowledge and the creation of innovative jobs in the area.
