I am a marine ecologist, data scientist, and climate change analyst, leader of the new Biodiversity Data Science research group (www.biodiversitydatascience.com; CCMAR, University of Algarve). I have a strong background in statistical modelling and an interest in patterns and drivers of biodiversity, biogeography and evolution, with global applications in climate change impact assessments (e.g., IPCC). During the last years, I have focused on two major questions: (1) how climate-driven distributional shifts and oceanographic connectivity structure global marine biodiversity, from genes to ecosystems, and (2) what are the main consequences of climate change and local selective pressures to marine biodiversity. These leading questions, particularly unknown for marine ecosystems, were studied at multiple temporal scales, from past climate extremes (e.g., Last Glacial Maximum, ~20,000 years ago) to the new generation of climate change scenarios. I take a leading role in developing improved machine learning and computational frameworks for predicting global biodiversity patterns under contrasting global change scenarios, and also platforms for sharing data under the FAIR (i.e., Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable) principle and following standards of reproducibility. So far I have published 60 scientific articles in high-impact journals (inc., Science and Global Change Biology), 22 of which as a leading author and 4 as a senior. An additional high-impact publication was a blue paper in the scope of the High-Level Panel for Sustainable Ocean Economy. My publications were highly cited (2200 citations and h-index of 26) and distinguished with multiple awards. Working at CCMAR offered the opportunity to engage in multiple national and international teams. I have strong links with world-leading PIs, with whom I work frequently (e.g., Dr. Miguel Araújo, Portugal, Dr. Kyle Cavanaugh, USA, Dr. Mark John Costello, Norway, Dr. Carlos Duarte, Saudi Arabia and Dr. Hu Zi-Min, China). I enrolled in relevant networking initiatives, such as the European Marine Science Network, the International Networking Event on Adaptation to Climate Change, the Marine Biodiversity Observation Network (MBON) of the Group on Earth Observations Biodiversity (GEO BON), and the Ocean Decade initiative (U.N. Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development). I teach "Marine Ecological Modelling and Climate Change" as a full lecturer in the international MSc and PhD programmes of the University of Algarve, and I have supervised numerous PhD, MSc and undergraduate students. I outreached to different audiences by participating in numerous international conferences, developing citizen science initiatives and my on-line journal, and engaging the national media (inc., TV and radio broadcasting).
