I have completed the PhD in Physics in 1999, Instituto Superior Técnico (University of Lisbon - UL), in the area of plasma physics, obtained the Master's Degree in Particle Physics in 1995 by the Faculty od Sciences at UL and graduated in Physics in 1991 also at UL. I belong to the teaching staff of the Physics Department at the University of Algarve (UAlg) since 1996 and I am currently the coordinator of CEOT (Center for Electronics, Optoeletronics and Telecommunications), also based at UAlg. I am currently engaged in developing a research line in optical diagnostics, with emphasis on light scattering and biological applications. Specifically, I am particularly interested in the application of the concepts of light scattering in turbid media to the non-invasive determination of fruit internal quality parameters. The research has a strong focus in industry applications, since our group is presently collaborating with the industry on a prototype for fruit sorting by internal quality attributes. More recently we have started a line of research for early detection of phyto-pathology symptoms in plant leaves through visible/near infrared spectroscopy. However, my work relies also on fundamental studies on diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, chemometrics, models for light propagation and instrumentation issues, which allowed us to apply these techniques in other fields, such as led illumination in aquaculture, honey characterization and infrared spectroscopy. Complimentary areas are diode laser spectroscopy (experience through the post-doc in Umea) and light scattering in plasmas (Ph.D.)
