Antonio Miguel Piecho de Almeida Santos has a Degree in Biology-Marine Biology (5-years course with undergraduate thesis), a PhD in Geophysical Sciences-Oceanography from the Univ Lisboa, a DSc-Habilitation in Marine Sciences by the Univ Algarve, and more than 30 years of research experience on the relationships between the environment and marine organisms. He is a Full Researcher (Investigador Coordenador) at IPMA (the Portuguese Institute for the Sea and the Atmosphere) and a member of the Group of Oceanography and Climate Changes (OC2) of the Centre of Marine Sciences (CCMAR) of the Univ Algarve. He is the Portuguese (National) Focal Point for the IOC-UNESCO Argo Programme, IPMA's representative in EuroGOOS, Co-chair of the Steering Committee of the Fishing Vessel Ocean Observing Network (FVON), the President of EMSO-PT and the President of the Portuguese Oceanography Society. He was the Portuguese (National) Focal Point for the European Ocean Observing System (EOOS) Operations Committee and one of the Coordinators of the Agenda do Mar (Sea Agenda) for the Portuguese Government. He was the President of IPMA's Scientific Council (2012-2017), the President (2015-2016) and Vice-President (2014) of the Forum of State Laboratories Scientific Councils, a member of the Portuguese IGBP/Global Change Committee, and the National Representative for GLOBEC core project. He has been involved in more than 40 national and international projects (10 as coordinator or PI). In recent years, his research has focused on the physical-biological interactions in the ocean through an end-to-end approach, on the impact of global change in the ocean, and on ocean observing systems. This is reflected in more than 100 publications (57 as Scopus documents) with 2996 citations and an h-index of 28 (Scopus). Other areas of interest/expertise are fisheries, oceanography, fish ecology and the applications of satellite remote sensing to marine fisheries and oceanography.
