Anabela Romano, full professor of Biotechnology at the University of Algarve, graduated in Biology in 1989 and got her Ph.D. in Biology (Plant Biotechnology) in 1994 (Faculty of Sciences, University of Lisbon). She joined the University of Algarve in 1995 and has since been responsible for the Plant Biotechnology Laboratory. Since 2014, she led the process of creating the Research Center for Biological Resources and Mediterranean Food (MeditBio-R&D Unit FCT No. 4325). She was part of the management of the center since its creation, was responsible for the Plant Bioresources group and coordinated the center from 2017 to December 2019. She is currently part of the research center MED (Mediterranean Institute of Agriculture, Environment and Development) and Associate Laboratory CHANGE - Global Change and Sustainability Institute, and the coordinator of the MED/UAlg (a Management Unit with financial autonomy). Since 2021 she is the director of the Department of Biological Sciences and Bioengineering (FCT/UAlg). She is the PI of several completed and ongoing projects, collaborates with several institutions, and participates in courses and conferences, both national and international. She was Vice-Rector of the University of Algarve, a member of the General Council of the University of Algarve, of the Academic Senate, and of the Scientific Council of the Faculty of Science and Technology. By appointment of the rector, she has been part of several committees, including the Ethics Committee of the University of Algarve, the Executive Committee for the organization of the 40th anniversary of the University of Algarve, and the Working Group within the scope of the Mediterranean Diet. She was appointed by the Minister of Science, Technology and Higher Education to the International High-Level Panel for the selection and monitoring of the programs «Impulso Jovens STEAM» and «Impulso Jovens», within the scope of the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR). She is a member of the External Assessment Commission of the A3ES (Agency of Higher Education Assessment and Accreditation) and a member of the External Assessment Commission for the Institutional Evaluation of ARES (Higher Education Regulatory Agency from Cabo Verde).
