What are special educational needs (SEN)?

Students with special educational needs (SEN) are considered to be those who have certain specific conditions, as a consequence of which they may need a set of particular educational resources, during all or part of their academic career, in order to facilitate their academic, personal and social-emotional development. It should be noted that these conditions may be chronic or temporary.

It is necessary, therefore, to recognise these students’ entitlement to equal rights so that they can participate in all spheres of academic life successfully.

In order to promote their inclusion, it is important to adopt appropriate and anti-discriminatory measures and solutions. To this end, a set of measures applicable to students with SEN has been put in place to guarantee that they can access and pursue their studies at the University of Algarve (see Support Regulation for Students with Special Educational Needs).

The application of these measures should be considered in accordance with the principle that the education of people with SEN should take place in the least restrictive environment possible, but without giving up the parameters of demand and quality of the teaching and learning process.

Who is this status for?
  • Students who have physical or sensory disabilities (hearing impairment, visual impairment, motor impairment and/or others) which put them at a disadvantage with regard to academic performance;
  • Students with dyslexia, dyscalculia, attention deficit and hyperactivity or other difficulties associated with understanding written material;
  • Students with chronic diseases (e.g. asthma, epilepsy) or long-term diseases associated with periodic and frequent treatments or aggressive treatments (radiotherapy, chemotherapy, or similar) that put them at a disadvantage in terms of academic performance;
  • Students who present with chronic mental illness (autism, Asperger's, depression, bipolar disorder or others) which strongly compromises adaptation and is limiting with regard to the academic learning process.
How do I apply for this status?

The status of student with special educational needs (SEN) must be requested at the time of registration, or at another time, if the particular needs are only identified later or are the result of events occurring after the beginning of the academic year.

Students seeking this status must submit an application to the Rector of UAlg by filling out the application form here or available from Academic Services, accompanied by up-to-date specialist reports. Students must also specify what support they need in terms of class attendance and assessment.
