Overview
To train professionally qualified teachers for recruitment groups 300, 320, 330, and 350, for lower secondary (third cycle of basic education) and upper secondary education.

The programme aims to train teachers, within the framework of a dynamic construction of knowledge, who are able to critically understand the social, political, historical, cultural, and economic realities that contextualise the practice of the profession and the uses of languages. Its goal is to provide professional qualification to teachers who are critical, responsible, and ethically demanding, for teaching in the third cycle of basic education and in secondary education within the Portuguese education system.
Graduates of the programme are expected to be capable of managing learning situations that are consistent with the assumptions of the current legal framework, fostering in students competences in the domains of knowledge, know-how (skills), social behaviour, and personal development.
In addition to strengthening or systematising subject-matter knowledge in the area of teaching, students will develop knowledge, skills, and competences in general education, as well as in the specific didactics of languages in contexts of linguistic and cultural diversity and in relation with others.
The learning objectives may be grouped under the overarching goal of training and professional development for the teaching of languages, including initiation into professional practice and supervised teaching practice, carried out under the guidance of both university supervisors and cooperating teachers. The knowledge, skills, and competences to be developed emphasise the professional dimension of future teachers, whose practice will take place within continuous social, cultural, and technological change.
