• Holders of at least a 1st cycle diploma (degree), or an integrated study cycle in the case of Integrated Master's courses, in accordance with the following conditions: 
  a) Hold a bachelor's degree or integrated master's degree in the areas of natural sciences, health and related sciences or exact sciences
  b) The minimum classification of the bachelor's degree or integrated master's degree is 14
  c) Candidates with a final average grade of 13 (13) are accepted, provided that they have a minimum of 5 years of professional experience in the area of the bachelor's degree/Integrated Master's
  d) Applicants are accepted if they have a minimum final average weighted undergraduate classification (60%) and master's (40%) of 14 points
  e) Applicants holding a post-graduate diploma (doctorate) are not required to obtain a minimum classification at bachelor's or integrated master's level
  f) The competences associated with previous academic training shall allow the crediting of a minimum of 120 ECTS, in accordance with Table no. 1 attached to Notice no. 13242/2019, of 22 August, published in Diário da República, no. 160, 2nd series
  g) Holders of a degree obtained abroad must have the degree and the final grade average recognized in Portugal, by the DGES or by a Portuguese university at the time of application
   
• For foreign candidates whose mother tongue is not Portuguese, fluency in written and spoken Portuguese is indispensable, equivalent to the minimum level of knowledge C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages
   
• The applicants must be fluent in both written and spoken English equivalent to the minimum level of knowledge B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. FMCB reserves the right to provide teaching content and/or assessments exclusively in English, including international examinations
   
• Candidates will have to demonstrate experience in volunteering or professional experience, where: 
  a) Volunteering means the provisions of Article 2 of Law No. 71/98, of 3 November
  b) For application purposes, only volunteer actions involving continuous and prolonged contact with vulnerable social groups in adverse conditions will be accepted, the following actions being excluded 
  i. Participation in groups of scouts
  ii. Participation in the Food Bank Against Hunger
  iii. Catechesis
  iv. Participation in Screenings
  v. Participation in Summer Camps
  vi. Tutoring or School Support
  vii. Participation in training or awareness actions
  viii. Management activities
  c) The minimum duration of volunteering is 12 months, with a minimum regularity of 1h/week
  d) The minimum duration of professional experience is 6 months
  e) Actions carried out within the curricular structure of the Bachelor's Degree, Integrated Master's Degree or Master's Degree will not be considered as volunteering or professional experience
   
• Candidates will be required to provide evidence of satisfying the Group A prerequisite - Interpersonal communication for access to Higher Education (DGES).

• Due to the current Covid-19 pandemic context, all voluntary activities related to the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and support of situations generated by the pandemic context will be exceptionally accepted for MIM application purposes, even if it has not been possible to have direct contact with individuals from the targeted populations.

Application

The submission of the application implies the reading of the application and selection regulations for the integrated study cycle leading to a master's degree in Medicine of the Faculty of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences of UAlg. 

Each year, the Assessment and Selection Committee (defined in Article 7 of the aforementioned regulation) analyses the individual processes of the applicants and proceeds with the accreditation of competences in accordance with Table No. 1 of Notice No. 13242/2019 published in the DR, 2nd series-No. 160, 22 August 2019

First selection phase

Assessment of Cognitive Skills

The first stage of the selection process includes a set of cognitive aptitude tests. These tests will be carried out by an external entity specialised in this type of assessment, which will work in close collaboration with the University of Algarve. 

The cognitive aptitude tests comply with the validity and reliability requirements required of psychological tests of this nature. 

The tests of cognitive aptitudes are aimed at assessing numerical reasoning, verbal reasoning and abstract reasoning. 

During the tests candidates will be asked to sign a declaration of honour concerning their language skills. False declarations are punishable by law. 

When taking the tests, candidates will be asked to sign a declaration that they are physically and psychologically fit to perform the proposed tests and are aware of these regulations. Candidates will also be asked to sign a declaration of consent to the processing of personal data. 

Classification method of the first phase

The classification, for the purposes of ranking the applicants in the first phase, will be calculated according to the formula: CS = Pa + GA + Id + UAlg + Vol + EP

CS: Serial classification, rounded to one decimal

Pa: Classification in the test of cognitive skills, expressed on a scale of 1 to 99 points rounded to one decimal. This classification corresponds to the average result obtained in the aptitude tests

GA: Academic degree, in which the master's degree holders will be scored with 2 additional points and the doctoral degree holders will have 10 additional points. Holders of Master's and Doctoral degrees will only receive the highest bonus, i.e. the one corresponding to the Doctoral degree

Id: Age: for applicants aged between 35 and 40 years five points will be subtracted and for applicants over 40 years old twenty points will be subtracted

UAlg: Applicants with bachelor's, master's or doctoral degrees from UAlg will be scored with 2 additional points. This bonus only applies once

Vol: Participation in voluntary service activities in accordance with Article 3(4), whereby 3 points shall be added for actions lasting between 2 and 12 months and 5 points for actions lasting more than 12 months. If the voluntary action took place in a developing country other than the one in which the applicant resides, 5 points shall be added. In all cases, a minimum weekly frequency of 1h/week is a requirement

EP: Professional experience, in which applicants who have less than 6 months of professional experience will have 8 points deducted

In case of a tie, the following criteria will be considered, in the order presented: 

• Classification in the cognitive skills test, rounded to the tenths 
• Age, with the youngest candidate advancing to the next phase 
• Once the criteria are exhausted and if the tie is maintained, the tied candidates go on to the next phase 

Second selection phase

Multiple Mini-interviews

The second stage in the selection process consists of a set of 10 to 15 multiple mini-interviews or stations of 8 minutes each, with a different assessor at each station. 

Each station has a theme, which can be presented as a question or scenario, aimed at assessing a specific competence of the candidate. 

In addition to the assessor, there may be an observer at each mini-interview or station.

Classification method of the second phase

At the end of the interview, the interviewer/observer will give a score to the candidate according to a specific grid for that station. 

At the end of the mini-interviews each candidate will have a mark that corresponds to the arithmetic mean (rounded to the tenths) of the marks obtained in all the stations. 

It is on the basis of the classification obtained in the second station, independent of the quotation of the first station, that the candidates for the Medicine course will be selected. 

In the event of a tie for the last available place, the classification of the first phase will be used for tie-breaking purposes, and if there is still a tie in the classification of the first phase, the tie-breaking criteria described here will be applied: 

• Classification in the cognitive skills test, rounded to the tenths 
• Age, with the youngest candidate advancing to the next phase 
• Once the criteria are exhausted and if the tie is maintained, the tied candidates go on to the next phase

To apply for the Integrated Master in Medicine at the University of Algarve, you need a minimum of 14 points out of 20 in your Bachelor’s degree (1st cycle) or Integrated Master (1st + 2nd cycles). The master's degree (2nd cycle) awards two (2) bonus points in the first phase of ranking applicants. Applicants with a final mark of 13 out of 20 are also accepted, provided that they have a minimum of five years of professional experience in the area of their bachelor’s or master's degree.

Any degree in the area of health sciences, exact sciences or natural sciences will be accepted as long as the curricular plan of the degree or integrated master's degree allows the accreditation of 120 ECTS. Do not forget that for your application to be valid you will have to fulfil all the requirements of the application and selection regulations.

Yes, this requirement is no longer necessary.

Any foreign citizen can apply for a course in medicine at the University of Algarve under the same conditions as a Portuguese citizen. Your application will only be valid if you meet all the requirements contained in the application and selection regulations. Please note that if your diploma is from a foreign country you will have to apply for recognition in Portugal beforehand.

No, the Integrated Master's Degree in Medicine at the University of Algarve does not accept transfers; it is a course exclusively for post-graduates, that is, it only accepts applicants who already have a degree or an integrated master's degree, regardless of whether they are attending a course in medicine in Portugal or abroad. If you have a previous degree, you can apply like any other applicant and your application will be accepted if you meet the requirements of the application and selection regulations.

No. As specified in article 3, paragraph 5 of the application and selection regulation: "The date to be considered for the purpose of fulfiling the application requirements corresponds to the last day of the deadline for the formalisation of applications."

Yes. What the regulation requires is that applicants have a minimum of 6 months of professional experience or a minimum of 12 months of volunteering. If you fulfil the requirement for professional experience and have at least two months of volunteering on your CV, this volunteering serves as a bonus in the first stage of ranking.”

As the application and selection regulation specifies, in Article 3, paragraph 4c: "For the purposes of applying, only voluntary actions that involve continuous and prolonged contact with vulnerable social groups in adverse conditions are accepted..." Volunteering can be done in more than one institution and the duration counted by the sum of periods in the various institutions. When submitting the application, the certificate of each volunteering period/institution must be presented, explicitly stating the start and end date of the volunteering, as well as the activities carried out in that institution. There is no expiry date for volunteering done, so volunteering done five years ago would be valid, for example.”

Yes. You will be entitled to a bonus of three points in the first stage of ranking in the amount of 3 points, as per article 7, paragraph 1 of the application and selection regulation, which specifies: “participation in voluntary actions lasting between 2 and 12 months earn 3 points and actions lasting more than 12 months earn 5 points. If the volunteer action was carried out in a developing country, other than the applicant’s place of residence, 5 points are added.”

During the entire application and selection process, all results will be published on the website dedicated to the course. There will be no other type of disclosure, so the consequences of the lack of consultation are the sole responsibility of the applicants.

You probably forgot to pay the admission fee for the selection tests. The admission of applicants to the first phase of the selection process is subject to the mandatory payment of a registration fee, to be fixed annually by the Rector of UAlg, on a proposal from the scientific committee of the DCBM, in order to bear the costs of the selection process and inherent administrative expenses. The first stage of the selection process consists of a set of tests of cognitive skills and a test of knowledge of the English language. The cognitive skills tests will assess the following skills: numerical reasoning, verbal reasoning and abstract reasoning.

The tests for the first selection phase (cognitive aptitude tests) are held on the same day at the University of Algarve, Gambelas Campus, Faro.

The tests for the second selection phase (mini-interviews) are held at the Faculty of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at the Gambelas Campus of the University of Algarve at a later date.

No. The interviews can be about generic medical topics as well as any other topic. No specific knowledge of medicine is needed to successfully do the interviews.

No. Videoconferencing is not feasible for these interviews, as they can consist of a “classic” interview between applicant and interviewer, but they can also be presented as a scenario in which you will have to interact with other people and/or objects.

At the end of the interview, the interviewer/observer will give each applicant a mark according to a specific grid for that station. At the end of the mini-interviews, each applicant will have a rating that corresponds to the arithmetic average (rounded up to tenths) of the ratings obtained across all stations.
