Under the motto “A local contribution to global development”, the University of Algarve (UAlg) has just launched its annual magazine «UALGzine» number 13. Starting with the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), in this edition we highlight the contribution of UAlg to this mission, through a showcase of 32 projects, linked to research and teaching.

On 1 January 2016, the United Nations (UN) resolution entitled “Transforming our world: 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda” came into force. Consisting of 17 goals, divided into 169 targets, it was approved by world leaders on 25 September 2015, at a summit at the UN headquarters in New York (USA).

The 2018/2021 Strategic Plan of the University of Algarve, unanimously approved at the General Council meeting of 11 July 2018, highlights the convergence with the United Nations 2030 agenda for sustainable development. The same plan defends an institution committed to society, emphasising that it will be through individual action within teams that it will be possible to increase collective performance. Everyone, individually, has a role to play, including universities as centres of knowledge and science.

As an ambitious mission, the University of Algarve wants to address the various dimensions of sustainable development, showing the importance of its contribution to this integrated platform, which aims to respond to the needs of people and governments, promoting peace, justice and effective institutions. Universities should therefore stand out in this global mission, either through the science they produce and the citizens they train, or through the partnerships they create and the values they transmit.

If the previous issue of UALGzine was dedicated to the 40 years of the University, making known some important facts through testimonies of those who were in its genesis, in this edition it is intended that the reader knows what UAlg has been doing and/or is doing to mitigate the enormous economic, social and environmental challenges that the planet faces, because the implementation of the SDGs is a challenge that requires the active participation of all.
