José Horta Correia, Emeritus Professor in 2012

At the ceremony commemorating the 33rd anniversary of the University of Algarve, which took place at 17h00 on December 12, 2012, in the Great Auditorium of the Gambelas Campus, the Title of Professor Emeritus was awarded to José Horta Correia.

Awarded for the first time in 2012, the title of Professor Emeritus distinguishes retired or retired full professors and principal coordinators for their relevant contribution to the advancement of science and culture and for their services to the community. 

José Horta Correia continues to render relevant services to Portuguese History and Culture and to the University of the Algarve. At this institution he was one of the founders of the Cultural Heritage course (1999), the first of its kind in Portugal, and was responsible for the MA in History of Portuguese Art. In his important career, which has greatly contributed to the consolidation and dissemination of a whole History of the Algarve, are included the participation in research projects, the guidance of several research works and the authorship of national and international publications. The look at the urbanism of his hometown, object of study of his doctoral thesis - Vila Real de Santo António. Urbanism and Power in Pombaline Politics - earned him the Gulbenkian Prize for the History of Art in 1997.
