The European Day of Languages, 26th September, is marked at the University of Algarve with a meeting of the partners of the European project Adding Plurilingual Approaches to language Teacher Competences in Higher Education (APATCHE) which, besides UAlg, counts with the participation of the Universities of Antwerp, Warsaw, Milan Catholic University and Vytautas Magnus University of Kaunas (coord.)

Manuel Célio Conceição, professor at the Faculty of Human and Social Sciences and responsible for this project at UAlg, underlines "the importance of research and teaching in languages and language sciences for the quality of training, research and transfer that are the responsibility of higher education, in the necessary internationalization strategy and in the imperious contribution to local and regional development". For the lecturer and researcher at the Arts and Communication Research Centre (CIAC), "there is no science without communication and for that it is necessary to promote the plurilingual competences of all (including the lecturers)".

Manuel Célio Conceição is assisted in the APATCHE project by CIAC teachers and researchers Pedro Sousa, Neuza Costa and Fátima Noronha.

On this European Day of Languages, it should be noted that UAlg has relevant activity in this area in the European Language Council (CEL/ELC), in the Pan-Latin Terminology Network (REALITER), in the Lexicology, Terminology and Translation Network, associated to the French-speaking University Agency, and that the entry of the University of Algarve in the European Alliance of Universities of the Seas (SEA_EU) also highlights multilingual and multicultural dimensions that enhance its local and international affirmation.

To mark this day, CIAC will also be present at the Languages Fair organised by the Europe Direct Algarve office in Almancil, in collaboration with the European Commission representation in Portugal, Loulé City Hall and several other institutions.
