Culatra hosts SEA-EU BIP on sustainability and social innovation once again

Organised by the University of Algarve in collaboration with the University of Naples Parthenope and the University of Cádiz, the programme aimed to provide a multidisciplinary perspective on the challenges and opportunities of sustainability, with a particular focus on coastal communities.

The BIP included an online component, held on 9 and 11 June, which introduced the programme’s main themes, promoted scientific exchange between the partner institutions and supported the development of language skills. This was followed by the on-site component on Culatra Island, from 13 to 17 July, combining lectures, practical activities and direct engagement with local projects and stakeholders.

The opening session featured welcoming remarks by Patrícia Pinto, Vice-Rector for Partnerships and the European University (SEA-EU), and Vânia Sousa, Pro-Rector for Sustainability Sciences, who highlighted the importance of European cooperation and sustainability within the SEA-EU framework. The session also included presentations by Sílvia Padinha, from the Culatra Island Residents’ Association (AMIC), who introduced the challenges and opportunities facing the local community, and André Pacheco, researcher at CIMA, who presented the Culatra 2030 – Sustainable Energy Community initiative, a flagship project promoting the energy transition and resilience of island communities.

Throughout the week, participants explored the interconnections between environmental, social and economic systems through a diverse programme covering topics such as the resilience of coastal communities, water circularity and solar desalination, smart electricity grids, energy sustainability in the tourism sector, the green transition in European cities, marine protected areas, underwater acoustic propagation, sustainable tourism, community development and empowerment, sustainable food production, solar cooking and sea-inspired sustainable design. The programme brought together lecturers and researchers from the University of Algarve, alongside experts from partner universities and local organisations.

On the final day of the programme, the BIP also welcomed a delegation from the University of Maryland Baltimore County (United States of America), one of SEA-EU’s external partner universities. Comprising two lecturers and six students, the delegation joined the BIP activities as part of a parallel programme organised by the University of Algarve in partnership with the Luso-American Development Foundation (FLAD). Their participation provided an additional opportunity for international exchange, enriching the experience of all participants through the sharing of perspectives and dialogue between different academic and cultural contexts.

Aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda, the programme offered students an international, interdisciplinary learning experience with a strong emphasis on the practical application of knowledge. 

Through case studies, field visits, collaborative work and direct engagement with the realities of Culatra Island, participants deepened their understanding of the blue economy, the development of more resilient and inclusive communities, and the role of social innovation in advancing sustainable development.

The programme concluded on the afternoon of 17 July with a farewell sunset gathering on Culatra Island, providing an opportunity for participants to celebrate the end of a week marked by learning, international cooperation and the creation of new connections between students, academics and SEA-EU partners.
