UAlg hosts BIP on Identity, Heritage and Innovation in Coastal Cities

The University of Algarve hosted, from 22 to 26 June, the on-site component of the Blended Intensive Programme (BIP) Europe in Dialogue: Identity, Heritage and Innovation in Coastal Cities, an initiative promoted within the framework of the SEA-EU Alliance – European University of the Seas.

Coordinated by the University of Algarve, the programme brought together 22 students from the eight SEA-EU partner universities, accompanied by academic staff and supported by five UAlg student volunteers. Six academic staff members from the University of Algarve also took part in the initiative, further reinforcing the international and collaborative dimension of the European alliance.

With an interdisciplinary approach, the programme fostered dialogue around themes such as identity, cultural heritage, sustainability, innovation and resilience, encouraging participants to reflect on the role of coastal regions as spaces of cultural exchange, sustainable development and social transformation.

Following a virtual component held in May, the on-site week at the University of Algarve combined theoretical sessions, practical activities, field visits and moments of exchange among participants from different academic and cultural backgrounds.

Throughout the week, participants explored key themes including the history and identity of European coastal cities, the tangible and intangible dimensions of cultural heritage, environmental and urban resilience, coastal gastronomy, and future challenges related to sustainability, innovation and adaptation to global change.

The practical component included visits to emblematic sites in the region, such as Faro’s historic centre, the Ria Formosa Natural Park and Faro Municipal Market, providing participants with direct contact with the Algarve’s cultural, heritage and environmental richness.

More than an international academic experience, this BIP provided an opportunity to strengthen intercultural dialogue and promote collective reflection on the future of Europe’s coastal regions. The initiative reflects the commitment of SEA-EU and the University of Algarve to fostering a more international, collaborative and forward-looking education, aligned with the challenges of sustainability, ecological transition and European cohesion.
